General Tips
- Spills should be cleaned up immediately to avoid becoming embedded in the rug.
- Instead of rubbing stains, wipe them with a cloth to prevent them from setting in the fibres.
- After cleaning, make sure all cleaning agents are thoroughly removed.
- To absorb any leftover moisture after cleaning, use dry towels.
- Always utilise trustworthy rug professionals when having rugs properly cleaned (particularly hand-made carpets).
- Before having the rug professionally cleaned, have it inspected by the cleaner to confirm its condition and receive a signed receipt and work warranty.
Vaccuming
- Vacuuming using a high-quality vacuum cleaner on a regular basis is the most important thing you can do to keep your rug looking beautiful.
- Using a vacuum, vacuum thoroughly and regularly. This prevents irreversible harm to your rug by preventing soil particles from penetrating deep into the fibres.
- Vacuum rugs located in high-traffic areas of your house or business more frequently.
- Never vacuum your rug’s fringes, especially if it’s a hand-knotted rug.
Cleaning & Removing Stains
- If you act soon after a spillage, you can avoid a lasting stain on your rug.
- Use a clean cloth to absorb liquid spills and press tightly around the spill to absorb as much as possible. Please don’t rub! This can embed the stain deeper in the rug, making it more difficult to remove and increasing the chances of it reappearing.
- Make a solution of water, white vinegar, and mild detergent to remove stains. Mix the solution and carefully apply only the foam that rises to the top to the affected area. Finish by wiping away any remaining residue with a clean towel. Professional rug cleaning is advised for stains that are difficult to remove.
Shedding
Wool rugs shed naturally as a result of its construction; this is especially true with fresh wool carpets. This shedding, however, will fade over time and can be decreased by following these simple instructions:
- Under your carpet, use a high-quality rug pad to prevent surface friction, which can cause excessive shedding.
- A new wool rug should be vacuumed. For the first few weeks, vacuum 5-6 times a week with a low-pressure vacuum cleaner without beater bars.
- Vacuum in the pile’s direction, not against it.
- Shedding is normal and expected with wool rugs, however excessive shedding in high-quality wool carpets will fade in 4–6 months.
- To remove loose ends, trim them using scissors rather than pulling them.
Flattening and Removing Creases
Your new area rug or runner may develop temporary wrinkles or kinks as a result of the packing and shipping process. These surface waves are not flawing or damage, and they will go away with time. You can help the process of flattening and removing creases by doing the following:
- Back-rolling or reverse rolling your area rug or hallway runner is the quickest and easiest approach to remove creases.
- These wrinkles and waves will usually smooth out on their own, so you can usually just give your rug or runner plenty of time to settle.
- To avoid flattening piles, place rug covers beneath the legs of heavy furniture.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
- The colours in your area rug will fade over time if they are exposed to direct sunlight.
- If at all possible, keep your area rug out of direct sunlight. To limit the chance of fading, place the object in the centre of the room.
- To shade your rug, draw your curtains or lower your blinds.
- UV rays can be blocked by using protective window coverings or window coatings.
